Conventions of John Ford films

From the John Ford films which I have watched they tend to begin with men singing and there is often a long shot of cowboys riding on horses. There seems to be a set kind of costume with the cowboys which is a cowboy hat, suspenders, leather belt, waistcoat, neckerchief, chaps and boots. the typical setting seems to be flat land and deserts (dramatic landscape)
